2010 Mega Stack Challenge XVI Preview
by Bodog Poker | May 7 2010
Foxwoods Casino Resort is only a couple of days away from hosting the
2010 Mega Stack Challenge XVI, and poker celebrities Dennis Phillips and Kevin Schaffel have been brought in to host the event.
There are three tournaments scheduled which will run from May 11 to 17 and will have a combined guaranteed prize pool of $500K. Dates of each event are structured in a way where one can play in all three events over the eight days of play, if they so desire. Each event has a different buy-in amount - there’s a small, medium, and higher stakes event - so players of all levels will have an opportunity to get in on the action.
The first event on the schedule is a $340
No Limit Holdem tournament that will run for two days on the 11th and 12th. This event will be guaranteed for $125K and should easily surpass that total prize pool.
The next event is the $560 No Limit Holdem event which will run from the 13th to the 14th. This event has the same $125K guarantee but the cost of entry is higher at the $560 buy-in.
The final tournament of the 2010 Mega Stack Challenge XVI will be the $1,650 Main Event from May 15-17. That tournament will have a $250K guarantee, and like the other events, the prize pool should easily exceed the guaranteed amount.
The presence of
poker celebrities will add an element of competition and interest in the events. Dennis Phillip is most famous for his third-place
WSOP Main Event finish in 2008 where he pocketed a cool $4.5 million. He also has a third-place finish in the NBC Heads-Up Championships Challenge in Las Vegas.
Schaffel has been cashing in tournaments for years. He made the final table at last year’s WSOP Main Event, and two years ago in 2008 placed second at the WPT Legends of Poker. The two will host the 2010 Mega Stack Challenge XVI; what role they will play in the events remains to be seen.
Like in most areas of the U.S. and Europe, players are scrambling to win a seat in the 2010 WSOP Main Event. Lucky players will get an automatic chance to win millions of dollars in the WSOP Main Event, while others will win enough cash in a tournament like this one to buy their way into a WSOP event.
With tournament guarantees like these ones, the eventual winners will be able to play any WSOP event they want.
