The action for the 2010 Borgata Winter Open got underway on January 20 and so far results from the first five events are in. A variety of tournaments have been played ranging from $300 to $700, and so far local players have been making a big impression on the results. To date three holdem tournaments have been played out, one of them being a deep stack event, as well as a pot limit Omaha and H.O.S.E event. There are 24 tournaments in total at this year's Borgata Winter Open, including the five-day 2 Million Guaranteed $3500 Main Event.
Event #1 was the two-day $400 Deep Stack Holdem tournament. An impressive 1,563 players entered, which built a $547K prize pool. The biggest share of that prize pool went to a Lutherville, Maryland native named Brian Woods. He walked away with the $99,919 first-place prize. It was Woods' seventh live tournament cash, and it was easily his biggest ever. Before this win his best finish was ninth place in the Borgata $250K Guaranteed last October, worth $5,400. Local New Jersey player Gary Gurevich finished second to Woods and was $74K richer after the final hand had been played out.c
Event #2 was another holdem event but attracted fewer players. This event was $700 to enter and drew 368 entrants. That made for a $184K prize pool which paid out 36 players. The winner was Robert Perry from Highland Beach, Florida and he collected $51,759 for his efforts. It was Perry's third live tournament cash of 2009 and was also the biggest of his playing career. He beat out Tyler Henry of Wernersville, Pennsylvania who had to settle for the $29,985 second-place prize.
Next up was the $400 Pot Limit Omaha Event #3. Only 131 players paid the $400 to play, which made for a prize pool worth $45,850. John Binns of Tamarac, Florida got his fourth cash in live tournaments when he outlasted the rest of the field to win the $13,698 first-place prize. He beat out William Seymour of Las Vegas in the heads-up battle, forcing Seymour to settle for the $7,561 second-place prize.
Event #4 was much like Event #2. It was another $700 no limit holdem event and it attracted almost an equal number of entrants. 325 players battled for a prize worth $227K, and when the dust settled it was Little Neck, New York native Daniel Mulhall who won the $63,996 first-place prize. In second place, winning $37,073, was Benjamin Klier from Astoria, New York.
Event #5 was the $400 H.O.S.E event which attracted 178 entrants. Bart Fooden got the biggest share of the $62,300 prize pools, taking home $18,613 for the win. The win was Fooden's first big live tournament cash. Toma Kalaj finished second, earning a $10,273 payday.
