2010 Midwest Regional Poker Championship

by Bodog Poker | Feb 19 2010

The 2010 Midwest Poker Championships have begun at the Horseshoe Casino in Elizabeth, IN and action will continue until the main event wraps up on Feb 28. Players in the area will get to practice their live multi-table tournament skills in preparation for the big spring tournaments and the WSOP that begins in late May.

In total there will be a dozen events played at the Midwest Poker Championships, and the action will include different poker variations and formats. Buy-in amounts are small enough for any player to try their luck, and the main event will be cheap enough to attract intermediate as well as professional players.

The first three events will be no-limit holdem events with a regular tournament structure. They will cost $240, $350, and $560, respectively, and none will have any add-on or re-buy features. These events should attract larger amateur playing fields and some nice prize pools. Organizers are expecting a big turnout for the first event as they've scheduled three days to play it out.

The next event is a $25K Freeroll on Feb 21 and then a couple of no-limit holdem tourneys for $240 each, Event #4 being a six-handed event and Event #5 a re-buy.

Next up will be the one-day $240 H.O.R.S.E event starting on February 23. The low buy-in amount should get more amateur players trying out their new H.O.R.S.E skills. After that tournament there will be another $240 regular no-limit holdem tournament in the Event #7 slot.

After that one is complete it will be the $350 Pot-Limit Omaha tournament. This one is likely to have more pros, but PLO tournament numbers for amateurs in H.O.R.S.E tournaments are growing all the time.

Event #9 is another regular no-limit holdem tournament; this one will cost $350 to enter. The next is #10 on February 26 and will be a $240 no-limit holdem Turbo event for all those action junkies in the region. The next day will be the start of the two-day main event. This one has a buy-in of $2100 and should have a decent prize pool to contend for. Last year there were 121 players that played, and they created a prize pool worth a little over $300K. Adam Friedman took home the $92K first-place prize.

On February 28 the final day of the main event will be played out, but for those who hit the rail early there will be one more $240 no-limit holdem tournament to play. This event will quickly fill up with the regular entrants and the constant spillover from the main event. Online forum opinions for the tournament have been mixed.

Many like the varied action for a tournament in this region of the country, but more have expressed concern for the unusually large rake that's going to the casino. And fortunately many pros will opt out of this action because of the unfavorable percentage going to the house.
