Florida
First, he accused the players from the sunshine state of being uniformly terrible and then he took the top spot in their largest
poker tournament. That’s just how Mike "The Mouth" Matusow rolls, we suppose. As we mentioned in this week’s The Water Cooler, Mike was in Florida for one of the DeepStacks Live events and he decided to partake of the local color at the Florida State Poker Championship. He took the top-spot and over $100,000 in the 3-day-long, $1,000 buy-in tournament. Of course, Matusow’s
poker skills are nothing to sneer at, but luck was definitely in his corner a few times, such as when he pushed in all his chips while holding 99 against KK and coming up golden. The 3-time
WSOP gold bracelet winner now has over $6,500,000 in tournament winnings.
Hong Kong
A 30-year-old grad student won Asian’s largest land-based poker tournament so far, the Macau Millions, held in its namesake city. The $1,000,000 guaranteed tournament brought in a total of 741 players, easily trumping the previous record of 679 players at the Filipino Poker Tour at the Metro Card Club. The buy-in for the tournament was HK$2,200 and the assembled players easily pushed the total prize pool far beyond the guarantee, bringing it up to HK$1,467,180. 53 players made it to the final day and despite an early chip lead by Bryan Huang and Raymond Wu’s typically strong competition, Justin Chan captured the top slot and earned a nice return on his investment.
Hollywood
Christian Slater is going to be the lead in an upcoming feature called Guns, Girls and Gambling, facing off against Gary Oldman, Dane Cook and a bevy of others in a story that apparently manages to include Elvis impersonators, Indians, a six-foot-tall blond assassin, a frat boy, a corrupt sheriff, a prostitute, and a rare American Indian artifact stolen during a high-stakes poker game at an Indian casino. It’s nice to see that the screenwriters and producers are apparently working in every Vegas cliché they can think of this time instead of picking and choosing.
Los Angeles
Think you’ve got what it takes to be an on-air personality for the World Poker Tour? WPT is currently looking for someone to host its brand-new segment entitled "The Raw Deal." The Raw Deal is designed to be a fun, playful look at the scene around the various World Poker Tour stops, offering commentary about the game and players that fascinate so many. You can currently audition on the WPT Facebook page, but they’re also hosting live auditions at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles on August 19 from 11:00AM to 8PM.
