Long Island, New York
A home poker game was interrupted at 2:15 in the morning on Saturday, September 4 by a pair of robbers. Police stated that the seven people were gathered around a table, enjoying a leisurely game when Key Martinez (17) and Bryan Urena (18) knocked on the house's side door. The homeowner refused to let them in, but they forced their way in, robbing the card players with what is believed to be a gun and a knife. Martinez and Urena demanded the group's cash, keys and cell phones. After their departure, the homeowner dialed 911 and three police officers: William Boyd, Doug Cota and John Rea chased down the suspects.
Detectives charged both young men with first-degree burglary and two counts of first-degree robbery. They were arraigned in Central Islip's First District court on Sunday morning and are currently being held.
Vilamoura, Portugal
British player Toby Lewis beat a field of 384 players and won €467,835 for his efforts in the European Poker Tour's stop at Vilamoura. The twenty-year old from Southampton beat a table packed with his fellow countrymen, particularly second-placer Martin Jacobson (€297,984), and got to claim his first major title. The duo were joined at the final table by Jason Lee (€186,240); Sam Trickett (€139,680); Teddy Sheringham (€93,120); Frederik Jenson (€74,496); Rob Hollink (€55,872) and Sergio Coutinho (€37,428.)
He may be young, but Lewis has had several successful tournament runs overseas, including two previous cashes on the European Poker Tour and a run at the final table on the Italian Poker Tour. He's already got $766,237 in tournament winnings in his career including over $660,000 from seven cashes in 2010 alone.
London, England
Jake Cody helped continue the UK's domination in the international poker scene this weekend, taking down the World Poker Tour London Classic. If you've not heard of the newcomer before, get used to seeing him around the tables; many are saying that he represents the next wave in British poker player. The 21-year-old, who learned the game with fellow countryman Matt Perrins while playing in £5 cash games, won the Deauville stop on the European Poker Tour for over $1,000,000 in January and added £273,783 to his bankroll with the win in London. This marks him as a phenom like the game has not seen in quite some time.
Cody beat Nichlas Mattson in heads-up for the title, playing QhQs against AdQd. Nichlas won £176,979 for taking second place and the rest of the final table was as follows: Bruce Atkinson (£93,316); Kristoffer Thorsson (£56,311); Giovanni Safina (£42,233); Sandiep Khosa (£34,189); Fabian Quoss (£26,144); Gareth Teatum (£18,100).
Cannes, France
The Partouche Poker Tour began at the Palm Beach Casino on Thursday, with many of poker's biggest names in attendance. Blogger Benjo DiMeo has spotted Phil Ivey, Phil Laak, Antonio Esfandiari, the Mizrachi Morthers and David Benyamine among others at the main event, where they're all competing for their slice of a €3,000,000 guaranteed payout. With a relatively low buy-in and a fantastic casino to play in, it's easy to see why this is one of the pros' favorite events in the scene, particularly considering the weather that Cannes is experiencing this week.
