Over the past year poker has continued to draw new players to the tables and there has been no shortage of
online poker news to make the headlines…
1. Joe Cada wins the 2009 WSOP Main Event. Breaking the record set the previous year as the youngest player ever to win the Main Event, Joe Cada won the coveted bracelet and the $8.5 million first-place prize. Cada beat out amateur player Darvin Moon after trailing numerous times during the final table action.
2. Phil Ivey makes the November Nine. The entire poker world was abuzz after one of the best players in the world made it to the WSOP final table. Despite being short stacked, Ivey was still one of the favorites to win it, but his luck wasn’t there and he went out in seventh place for a $1.4 million payday.
3. Patrik Antonius wins the biggest pot ever played for online. Since the hot shot Isildur1 showed up on the high-stakes cash game scene, the size of the pots have continued to grow. Antonius was able to win the biggest of all of them, taking down a pot worth $1.3 million in a
Pot Limit Omaha hand.
4. Jeffery Lisandro wins three WSOP bracelets in ’09 and goes deep into the Main Event. Lisandro won three bracelets in different variations of stud and then played his way into the later stages of the WSOP Main Event. He also won the WSOP Player of the Year honors, beating out Ville Wahlbeck by 35 points in the leaderboard standings.
5. After his son Jeff made the November Nine a couple of months earlier, Barry Schulman wins WSOPE Main Event. Schulman battled Daniel Negreanu, at a final table that lasted over 17 hours, to become the 2009 champion. The Cardplayer Magazine founder won his first WSOP bracelet in 2001 when he won a $1500 Seven-card stud High/Low event.
6. PartyGaming to buy WPT for $12.3 million. After announcing the sale, PartyGaming said that they would be paying a minimum of $3 million over the next three years to World Poker Tour’s vendors. The sale of the second-most recognizable brand in poker was a surprise to many in the poker industry.
7. 500 players turned away from the WSOP Main event. After waiting until the last minute, many players were frustrated when their chances of playing in the WSOP Main Event were dashed when organizers at the Rio reached capacity of the building. Over 500 players were sent away during registration and weren’t able to get a ticket.
8. PartyGaming agrees to pay landmark US Settlement of $150 million, to be paid in eight half-yearly installments. On the morning of the decision PartyGaming’s stock rose by 23p, or 10.5 per cent, to 238.35p in early morning trading.
9. Sandra Naujoks wins the EPT in Dortmund. After beating out two fellow German players, Sandra won the Shooting Star qualifier question. For the win she pocketed €917,000, easily her biggest cash to date. She has lots of cashes on the European poker scene, but this one was a huge win for female poker players everywhere.
10. Huck Seed showed his dominance in heads-up action after winning the 2009 NBC Heads-up World Championship, easily beating Vanessa Rousso in the final matchup.
