Land-Based Poker Tips: Poker Tells

Observing Opponents, Poker Tells
September 13 2008

If you’re a regular online poker player, you may want to take a crash course in poker tells before making your first journey down to your local casino’s poker room. Not only do you need to be able to figure out the poker tells that your opponents are putting out there, but you also need to know what your opponents are looking for when they’re checking you out.

Here’s a quick list of five poker tells to look for and make sure you’ve exorcised from your own game.

1. Look at your chips – It is very common for players to quickly look down at their chips if they make a hand when the flop or turn is dealt out. If you see a player make this quick look at their chips, watch out because they most likely have a hand. To avoid making this tell yourself, keep your eyes on the board and on your opponents instead of on your chips.

2. Eyes – A lot of poker pros can gain a ton of information from their opponent’s eyes. This is why so many of them wear sunglasses at the table. A lot of players stare too long at big hole cards, or constantly look to their left at the players remaining to act when bluffing.

3. Acting weak or strong – A large number of players make this mistake far too often. When they’re strong they act weak, and when they’re weak they act strong. Anyone trying to act intimidating is likely very weak and trying to get away with it, while a player acting disinterested or showing weakness is probably trying to hide a monster hand.

4. Posture – A lot of players give away the strength or weakness of their hands by changing their posture or body position without even thinking about it. Anyone slumped over in their chair likely isn’t confident about their hands, while someone sitting up straight and attentive is generally strong.

5. Trembling hands – Players with shaking hands at the poker table may seem like something you always see in movies and TV shows, but those nervous guys who get the shakes when they have a good hand actually do exist. It’s great to sit next to these guys because it will save you a ton of money, but if you’re the shaker, get it under control or don’t expect to win any big pots with big hands.
