Table Position,
Betting Strategy

Being out of position is a disadvantage in the game of poker, but you can’t play from a favorable position every time you play a hand. In situations where you’re head-to-head, having to act first after a card hits the board can give away your hand. If you’re playing against really good players, even your motions can give them a tell on what you’re holding.
One way to get around this situation is to act in the dark. That means to make your move before the next street. You can check or bet an amount before the dealer shows the next card. That keeps your opponent from knowing how you reacted to the new card.
The move throws off a lot of players. Novice players usually think you’re just pushing them around, while experienced players will suspect that you’re on a monster hand and trying to fake a bluff of some sort.
By acting in the dark you put the first move on your opponent. These plays are binding, and you can’t change your mind after the next card comes. Checking in the dark is a good move when you’re on the draw, and betting in the dark is a good move when you have the nut hand.
