There are tons of different leaks a player could have in their game. The most common leaks new players display are playing too many hands, and calling too many bets. Both of these leaks will cost you money in the long run, and if you don’t hit any hands your chips will disappear fast.
Novice players like to play the game, and they think that because there’s a possibility to win any hand, they should play every hand. If you don’t practice some restraint in your hand selection you will not win. You want to play hands that have a higher winning percentage pre-flop; and not any two cards because it’s cheap to get in the hand. Let your position decide which hands you play. The better your position, the weaker your starting hand can be.
Calling too many bets is another practice that will deplete your chip stack. Calling a bet is rarely the best play to begin with. Good poker consists of betting, raising or folding. If you’re in a draw situation, and would like to see another card, you need to figure out how many cards there are to improve your hand (outs). If there are only a few outs that can come, you don’t want to call a bet unless it’s very small.
Limit your play to situations where you have a big hand and you’ll fair much better. Patience is a powerful weapon on the poker table; don’t be in a hurry to lose your chips.
