If you're planning on hosting a home game and you're not sure how you should set things up, the best game to play is a sit-and-go tournament. Everyone buys-in for the same amount and the final finisher or finishers get the prize pool. A re-buy period and an add-on option will add to the prize pool, and players will be able to remain in the action after getting busted early.
A cash game is too difficult to run in a home game setting because a player can get up in money and just leave the game. That's not exactly the experience you want your friends to have on their Thursday night out. The sit-and-go has become so popular online because it’s the game setup that most players start out playing.
The key to a good home game is to set the blind elevations at a rate that will end the game around the time you'd like to end. If everyone starts with 10000 in chips and blinds start at 50/100, you'll want to raise them at about half-hour intervals.
